The shoulder is a very complex joint, surrounded by many supporting muscles. It is often inflammation in the tendons of these muscles, or problems with the muscles themselves, that cause shoulder pain and restricted movement.
Common muscles to cause shoulder pain are the 'rotator cuff' muscles, the muscles that cause rotation in the shoulder joint. Tendinopathy (disease of a tendon) of these muscles usually results from a trauma.
Sometimes shoulder pain presents as a result of a neck problem, an inflammatory arthritis, or even a problem with an organ, e.g. the heart or gallbladder.
It is therefore very important to have shoulder symptoms examined properly, to determine their cause.
