Sciatica occurs as a result of the sciatic nerve being irritated. It is not a diagnosis in itself, as it can result from many different injuries and conditions. Commonly it occurs as a result of lumbar disc problems, or tightness of muscles in the buttock.

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and supplies sensation, muscle strength, and reflexes in the leg. Thus, symptoms of sciatic nerve irritation include pain (sometimes severe), pins and needles (known as paraesthesias) and muscle weakness in the thigh, calf or foot.
