Chronic low back pain
This is back pain that has been present for more than 12 weeks, and is situated in the lower part of the back, below the ribcage.
There are many causative factors for chronic lower back pain, including pain as a result of multiple micro-traumas, for example, sitting incorrectly of a long period of time or poor posture. It can also be caused by osteoarthritis, a progressive form of arthritis that occurs as a result of 'wear and tear'.
Chronic low back pain of musculoskeletal origin is often due to the joints of the lower spine becoming tight and restricted. The resulting joint stiffness can irritate the surrounding tissues, and this can cause pain.
It is never normal to have back pain and stiffness, and symtoms that persist should be properly evaluated, so that the best advice and treatment may be given.
