This is neck pain of less than 6 weeks duration. Acute neck pain of musculoskeletal origin often occurs suddenly, and can be as a result of macro-trauma (a one-off injury). Examples of macro-trauma include: a road traffic accident, or a fall.
The joints at of the spine, known as facet joints, become inflamed and painful. The body will attempt to stop you moving the irritated area, resulting in muscle spasm and restricted movement . In severe cases, arm pain or numbness and tingling can occur.
Neck pain can occur for other reasons than damage to the joints and muscles. This is why, on your first visit, a thorough case history and physical examination takes place, so that the most appropriate advice and treatment can be given.
